Day 1: We travel to the beautiful Golden Isles of Georgia and the warm Georgia coastline, one of the ultimate resort escapes in America. The discovery of the Golden Isles dates back to the 1500’s when Spanish explorers came looking for gold. Gold was not found, but what they did find was a treasure of golden marshes, brilliant golden sun and a gorgeous sunset glow. Hence the name, the Golden Isles, still an accurate description after 500 years. We spend the night in Florence, SC.
Day 2: This morning we continue our journey south, arriving early afternoon where we check in to our luxurious lodging for the next three nights. This afternoon is free to explore the area before we savor a delicious dinner. (B, D)
Day 3: After a fabulous breakfast, we will depart on an exciting adventure into the land of the Trembling Earth, the Okefenokee Swamp. This swamp is one of America’s most remote areas. Traveling on a boat tour along ancient Indian waterways, we will observe the natural beauty of the swamp. This afternoon is free to enjoy the resort before relaxing over another dinner at the resort. Day 4: Following breakfast, we tour Jekyll Island with her 10 miles of sparkling beaches and stately live oaks. Our tour will include the famous Millionaires Village, once the playground of the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Goodyears and other famous American families. We then travel to quaint St. Simons Island. There we will be introduced to a plantation era that flourished here under King Cotton from 1800 to the Civil War. We also visit Fort Frederica, one of the largest and most expensive forts ever built by the British in North America. Our final stop will be Hofwyl Broadfield Plantation, presenting a classic example of low country architecture. Dinner is included tonight. (B, D)
Day 5: We depart Jekyll Island this morning enroute to Savannah for a tour of this charming city. We will experience the life of the antebellum South with its rich and stately homes, waterfront district and lovely gardens. We enjoy lunch at the popular Lady & Sons restaurant before touring the Savannah History Museum. Dinner will be on your own in the famous River Street District. (B, L)
Day 6: We depart Savannah and drive to Beaufort, the second oldest town in South Carolina. Here we relax aboard a carriage tour of this picturesque old port town, retaining much of the atmosphere of an earlier age. We continue north, spending the night in Lumberton. (B)
Day 7: Today we travel home full of wonderful memories of the Golden Isles of Georgia. We return home early evening. (B)
