West Virginia Railroads and Foliage

October 7-10, 2026

3 NIGHTS / 4 DAYS

Day 1: We depart for West Virgina and enjoy the foliage on the way to Romney WV. We board the Potomac Eagle for a 3-hour ride through a narrow mountain valley with a large population of bald eagles. An included boxed lunch will be served on board. We check into our hotel for the next 3 nights and have an included dinner to end our evening (L, D)

Day 2: After breakfast at the hotel, we depart for an exciting day of sightseeing. We board the Cheat Mountain Salamander, a vintage passenger train featuring restored rail cars with modern restrooms. This 2.5-hour excursion travels into the high-country forest. This trip also has many interesting features including: a long tunnel built with an “S” curve underneath Cheat Mountain, numerous long mountain vistas, and opportunities to see wildlife. After this ride, enjoy your boxed lunch and time to explore before boarding the Durbin Rocket, a rare steam locomotive, one of only three operating in the world. Experience the many beautiful views of the Greenbriar River in one of the open-air cars. Dinner and a show at the Gandy Dance Theater conclude our evening. (B, L, D)

Day 3: Following breakfast, we head to Davis and Elkins College to visit the Stirrup Gallery which features many unique collections of artifacts from a vast array of history. We will also have lunch together before continuing on to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory for a tour. This 13,000 square mile region has minimized radio signal interference and is used as a safe haven for radio astronomy. Our last train ride is on the Cass Railroad; the same line built in 1901 to haul lumber to the mill in Cass. This 2-hour ride features open-air cars. Dinner is included today near our hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 4: After another breakfast at our hotel, we depart for Omni Bedford Springs for a tour and lunch before heading home with many fond memories of our train tour of West Virginia. Pr
